Diana Nyad

Diana Nyad proved that some limits are more negotiable than they look. A long-distance swimmer and endurance athlete, she became known for attempting what many considered impossible: swimming from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage.

Nyad first attempted the 110-mile crossing in 1978, at age 28. At 60—after walking away from competitive swimming for more than 30 years—she returned to the sport, training for years to prepare for the distance, currents, jellyfish, heat, and physical exhaustion the crossing would demand.

After four failed attempts, Nyad succeeded in 2013, at age 64, swimming from Havana to Key West in roughly 53 hours. She swam without a protective cage or swim fins, and endured saltwater exposure, hallucinations, and extreme fatigue along the way.

The achievement was remarkable, but so was the decision to try again after decades. Her legacy lies in her refusal to treat age—or failure—as a final answer.
